The get to know your new sewing machine class is designed for beginner sewers to enable them to operate their machine safely and correctly. There is a lot to know when you first set up your new machine, therefore it is important to do it right as errors can take place if you are not doing it correctly. Learning the foundation set up skills makes sewing enjoyable and allows it to run smoothly.
Course Outline:
Introduction to the sewing machine, safety and equipment that comes with your machine
Threading your machine and bobbin
Correct threads that are specific for your machine
The different dials and components of your machine and what they do
Foundation stitches and different seam types
What stitch is suitable for what technique and why
Tips and tricks for successful sewing
Suggested projects for the beginner sewer
Choosing the correct pattern for your sewing level
Troubleshooting
Learning outcomes:
For students to be able to thread their machine correctly with the right tension and correct threads
For students to wind a bobbin correctly with even tension
For students to develop knowledge on different seam finishes and which type to use where
For students to feel comfortable using their machine on their own
For students to be able to troubleshoot any issues that arise and to know why it happened in the first place

What to bring:
If you have your own sewing machine please bring it with you and all the accessories that came with that machine including your manual. It is very important that you have a copy of your instructional manual for you to refer to and add to in class. If you can’t locate your manual please download it online. If you haven’t got your own machine you do not need to go out and buy one as you can use one of the college machines and learn what all the different features available are before you purchase your own machine. Also bring one spool of polyester Gutermann thread (no birch threads please), an empty bobbin that belongs to your machine, glass head pins, scissors, a notepad and pen. Please make sure you bring foot pedal and power cord.

Beginners Learn to Sew - One Day Workshop

From Jannali Station walk to the West side along Jannali railway (heading towards Sutherland), the fourth street on the right is Louise Street. Jannali Centre is at the end of Louise Street

Accessible toilet and ground floor wheelchair access available Monday – Friday 9:00am-5:00pm, see Reception for directions to room. After hours and weekends look for the Site Co-ordinator for room directions. Onsite Cafe open Monday to Friday 8:00am-3:00pm, Sat 8:30am – 1:30pm. Outside these hours there are drink/snack vending machines onsite.
