In this comprehensive Course, through the help and guidance of a Professional Photography Tutor, you will learn the fundamentals, and the principles of Photography in depth. You will go beyond the ‘full auto’ or program setting on your digital Optical DSLR or Mirrorless camera using the Shutter, Aperture and Manual modes. Learn how to set up, and use your camera properly, and capture truly creative and memorable photographs. This Course also gives students an opportunity to practice some of the theory, and exercises they have learnt during through the Course, in the experience of a 2 x hour field trip to be held in Week 7. This Course precedes the Intermediate Photography Course, which is offered every term, through the College.

Skill Level:

This class is suitable for students, whom have a basic knowledge of their camera and controls, and or have completed either a;

• Getting to Know your Camera Class
• Basic DSLR / Photography Class or similar

Course Outcome:

You will learn:

• To set up your camera properly; iso, image size and white balance, and colour space
• Reviewing your photographs properly
• Processing software and introduction to backing up

The fundamentals and principles of photography including;

• How to Focus properly and recompose
• Composition
• Portraiture
• Night photography
• Aperture and Depth of Field – DOF
• Shutter and Shutter speeds – freezing and blurring

Course Outline in detail:

• Introduction, set up, focus and recompose, and getting it sharp
• Point of View – POV, Composition and Negative space and Reviewing your photograph(s)
• Light and exposure, Aperture – Depth of Field and shutter speeds introduction, The Exposure Triangle, and under and over exposure.
• Portraiture, with flash and available light, family & group Photography.
• Action Photography; Motor drive set up, Focusing modes, shutter speeds slow to fast, Action photography – Freezing the moment and Panning.
• Night Photography Field Trip; Set up – iso and noise, hand held and long exposures, and an introduction to light painting.
• Photography equipment introduction; Memory cards, batteries, lenses, lens hoods, filters, tripods, monopods, and cable / wireless releases.
• Introduction of how to post process your photographs digitally, and introduction with free legitimate photo processing software.

Camera Equipment:

Any adjustable digital camera; DSLR / 4/3rds / Mirrorless with;

• RAW / JPEG image capability
• adjustable ISO / film speed settings
• with adjustable exposure settings; shutter, aperture and manual exposure i.e. S or TV, A or AV and M,
• with manual / auto focus capability
• also if your camera has adjustable picture control / picture style settings i.e. monochrome standard, neutral etc

Any Zoom lens(es) you have
18 – 55 mm , 18 – 135 mm , 16 – 35mm , 28 to 80 mm , 10 – 20mm , 40 – 150mm , 70 – 200 etc

Please note; An extra battery, and memory card are strongly advisable as you will be your using your camera, and reviewing your photographs frequently, during class lessons and exercises.
Batteries
Ensure your battery / batteries are fully charged whether they are half full or not, as your camera will be on for the entire first class lesson, and to charge your battery / batteries before each class.

Memory cards
An extra memory card is strongly advisable, the Tutor will advise students of what and how purchase a second / extra high quality memory card

Tripod gear:

• A sturdy tripod
• Tripod plate and spare plate if you have one
• Tripod head / tripod ball head
• A connected electronic cable release for your camera, as timing is crucial
• A spare connected electronic cable release or remote release if you have one
• Please note a sturdy tripod and tripod / tripod ball head and an electronic connected cable release (is essential as timing is crucial), Releasing with the delayed timer on your camera or button remote is not recommended
• Please note the tutor has a limited amount of spare tripods for students that do not already have one for the night field trip

What to wear:

As we will be doing some practical lessons outside the classroom

• Wet weather – Weatherproof clothing / weatherproof footwear / mini umbrella / rain jacket
• Cooler weather – Warm clothing; / jumper / beanie / hat / scarf•Warmer weather – comfortable clothing/ hat / sunglasses
• NO LARGE UMBRELLAS for safety reasons

Weather:

Classes / field trip will run regardless of the weather, to give participants an opportunity to photograph in fine or wet weather.
A field trip will only be postponed to a future date if heavy weather / thunderstorm is forecast or it is continuously raining.

If a venue for our field trip has not granted access i.e. lockdown / safety concerns etc, an alternative field trip will be offered during the course

General photography is permitted, but; (close up photos of families / adults and especially identifying children under 18 years old, should not be taken or be published, unless a model waiver has been signed)

Coffee / drinks / food / dinner / snacks /etc, transport to and from and any other expenses are not included in cost of this course
