What you need to know about this course:
- Prior to enrolling you must read the Mental Health Pre Enrolment Policy at the bottom of this page
- Classes commence in week 1 of each school term
- Students will be accepted into the class throughout the term
- You need to plan for approximately 5-10 hours per week at home to complete assessment tasks
- There is no training during school holidays
- Private Facebook groups are used to share resources and learning
- Resources are provided by SGSCC
- Student lounge available
- WiFi is available

Course entry Requirements
- You must attend a pre-enrolment meetingwith a SGSCC representative to ascertain suitability to the course and to review your current skills and experience
- New students are expected to attend a mandatory college orientation before course commencement. Orientation times and dates will be advised after enrolment.
- Current National Police Check (can be arranged through SGSCC)
- Complete an SGSCC English language, literacy and numeracy assessment to determine that the student has sufficient skills to successfully complete the course
- Note taking materials
- Unique Student Identifier (can be arranged through SGSCC)
- There are no formal educational requirements for entry into this course
- Recognition for units may be granted based on previous learning, studies, work and/or life experiences

- CHCMHS007 Work effectively in trauma informed care
- CHCMHS008 Promote and facilitate self-advocacy
- CHCMHS011 Assess and promote social, emotional and physical wellbeing
- HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety
- CHCCCS003 Increase the safety of individuals at risk of suicide
- CHCAOD001 Work in an alcohol and other drugs context
- CHCCCS017 Provide loss and grief support

Do you need to complete any work placement hours?
- Yes, you need to complete 80 hours (10 days) of work placement which will be organised by SGSCC.
- You will work as a student (unpaid) during work placement.
- Before commencing work placement, you will be required to get a current national criminal record check to allow you to work in a care service facility. SGSCC will assist you with this application process.
Do you need to sit for any exams?
- No. This is a competency-based course
- Tell us, then show us you understand and are able to implement the learning you have received
- You will be required to competently complete assessment tasks for all 15 units of learning
Assessments are made up by a range of:
- Case studies
- Demonstration
- Portfolio of evidence
- Presentation
- Questions and answers
- Research report
To be deemed competent:
- You will receive clear assessment instructions
- You must complete all assessments to a satisfactory standard as set by your trainer
- These are assessed by your trainer
- Opportunities will be provided for trainers to support students and to resubmit their assessments if required
When you have completed and been deemed competent you can:
- Progress with SGSCC to the CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health
Eligibility for Subsided Training under the Smart & Skilled Training Program
This training is subsidised by the NSW Government under the Smart & Skilled Training Program. To be eligible you must be
- an Australian Citizen/Perm Resident/NZ citizen/humanitarian visa holder
- aged 15 years or older, and
- live or work in New South Wales, and
- no longer be at school or equivalent

Eligibility for “Skilling for Recovery” - Fee-Free nationally accredited training
Skilling for Recovery is a NSW Government initiative to deliver JobTrainer funding in NSW. It provides free certificate, diploma and short course training to eligible applicants. If you meet the Smart & Skilled Program eligibility above and one of the following you could complete this course fee free:
- Unemployed (with or without a benefit); or
- At risk of unemployment; or
- 17-24 years old (employed or not)
